Describing Distance

VIDEO: English Standard and Metric System Units

Students read about the origins of measuring for length, as they did this they underlined the items they thought were the most important.  From the reading student wrote Cornell notes highlighting the positive and negative aspects about the English Standard and Metric System Units.

Motion

Students participated in a hallway demonstration to create a definition of "motion" and begin to form an understanding that in order to tell if an object is in motion you  need to use a reference point.  As we brought our discussion to an end we completed a Frayer Model on the word "motion".

We finished the lesson by reading and taking Cornell notes about motion, and creating our own scientific picture of an object in motion.

Writing a Procedure

Students were each given a picture.  They wrote a procedure for someone else to draw the same picture.  Then students switched notebooks and tried to follow the procedure to re-create the drawing.  Afterwards, students reflected on their written procedure.

Writing a Hypothesis

Students practiced identifying the independence, dependent, and control variable in an experiment and practiced writing a hypothesis.

The Scientific Method

In the Interactive Notebook students watched The Scientific Method Paper-Slide video I created to complete a basic graphic organizer about the process of solving problems (right side).  Then I read the class a story from "How To Think Like a Scientist" and together we analyzed how a chicken farmer used the scientific method to explain an observation he made about his livestock.  We broke down the farmers situation into the basic steps we had discussed in class, and completed another graphic organizer to that mirrored the first one (left side).

AVID Interactive Notebook

Today students finished setting up their AVID Interactive Notebooks.  This notebook is different than other notebooks because of the way it is organized.  We add an element of organization to the student notebook to improve students ability to remember content recorded in it.  On the cover students were instructed to draw a picture of themselves and write four traits that describe them.
